Ken Shaheen

Kenneth D. Shaheen attended public schools in Wichita and graduated from North High in 1947. He earned a BME in 1952 and MME in 1959 from Wichita State University with an emphasis in choral music. His 40 year teaching career was all in Kansas and included Pretty Prairie, Dighton, Haven, Campus High School in Haysville, music coordinator and high school choral director at Great Bend and Barton County Community College. He retired in 1992. Ken is a member of NEA, KMEA, MENC, and ACDA. He has served on Board of KMEA for many years and was State president from 1967-1969. Great Bend High School Concert Choir performed for KMEA in 1964, Barton CCC Choir and Hilltop Singers performed in 1976. Throughout the years Ken's groups and soloists were recipients of numerous first division ratings in league, district, regional, and state music festivals. Mr. Shaheen received the Harry Robert Wilson Award from KSACDA in 1983. He has served as church choir director in Dighton, Haven, Wichita, and Great Bend. He helped organize and develop the Barton County Choral Society of 150 voices. He has served as a clinician and adjudicator for league contests and KSHSAA music festivals. In retirement, Ken serves as Chairman of KMEA Retired Music Educators and has developed a directory to recognize all retired music educators.
